The Author of Nature

On this day in the year 1790, the world lost a famous social Philosopher and political economist by name Adam Smith. He was very instrumental in the rise of classical liberalism. His work, “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations” is considered the first modern work of economics. Although he had a complex view of religion, one of his most important religious statements was to refer to God as the “great Author of our nature.”


According to Adam Smith, “the noblest and best principles in human nature — lead us to believe that the great Author of our nature ... will complete the plan which he himself has taught us to begin and establish for us a future state, in which justice and decency are rewarded.” Smith also suggested that people who lack such a belief need not be immoral.


We must always remember to rely on and consult this great Author of our nature for direction and wisdom in our daily lives. 


“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)


Just as an author writes with intention, God has planned our very lives before we began to exist. Therefore we can trust Him with what He Himself has authored.

The current global standard for the measurement of dates is known as the Gregorian calendar, named after Pope Gregory XIII, under whose tenure it was instituted. Both the Gregorian calendar, and its predecessor - the Julian calendar - are based on the supposed birth date of Jesus Christ. It was Dionysius Exiguus, a Christian monk, who first proposed in the year 525 that dates be recorded in reference to the birth of Jesus Christ, hence the invention of the acronyms BC ("Before Christ") and AD ("Anno Domini" - Latin for "In the year of the Lord"). In relatively recent times, some have tried to change this with the excuse that it is not fair to other religious faiths. IS GOD SILENT OR WE ARE DEAF?

Erwin W. Lutzer in his book, Seven Reasons Why You Can Trust the Bible, narrates the story of Ingmar Bergman, a Swedish film director who one day stood next to a portrait of Christ in a cathedral in Europe and whispered, “Speak to me!” He only encountered dead silence after waiting enough while. It has been said Bergman was motivated by this experience to come out with a movie entitled Silence, which portrayed people who despaired in their attempt to seek God. Bergman’s frustration was evident in his words: “In our world, we hear only ourselves. No voice comes to us from outside the universe. When we seek a word from God, we are confronted with dead calm”.
