Remember the Sabbath Day (Part 2)

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy." (Exodus 20:8)


Today, we continue our lessons on the fourth commandment. Last week, we expounded the spiritual principle of Sabbath and established that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath - our ultimate place of rest from our dead works.


In Him, we rest from our fruitless efforts in trying to please God. This is possible because Jesus paid the price on the cross for our redemption. By faith in Him, we earn the right to become children of God. 


"Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12)


To observe the Sabbath day, therefore, means to place ones faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and to enter into God's rest.


Now, let's switch to the physical principle behind the observance of the Sabbath. God instituted the Sabbath day of rest to teach us the importance of recreational rest.


God knows that our world will become increasingly fast-paced and the opportunities and motivation to rest will continually dwindle. As hard work is almost always continually linked to success and prosperity, the desire to rest will increasingly be despised. Therefore, He instituted the seventh day of rest to help us wind down and recharge after every six days of hard work.
