What a Friend!

Joseph Scriven wrote the hymn, "What a friend we have in Jesus" in 1855 after several moments of personal grief and trials. He had to abandon his ambition to enlist in the military due to his poor health. On top of that, his fiancee died in a drowning accident on the eve of their wedding day in 1844. His plans for marriage were dashed again when his new bride-to-be died after a short illness in 1855.

No matter what comes our way, we can be assured that God will either deliver us from the storm or will keep us company through it all. Be blessed as you brood over the words of this hymn.

1 What a friend we have in Jesus,

all our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear,

all because we do not carry

everything to God in prayer!

2 Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged;

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Can we find a friend so faithful

who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness;

take it to the Lord in prayer!

3 Are we weak and heavy laden,

cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge--

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Do your friends despise, forsake you?

Take it to the Lord in prayer!

In his arms he'll take and shield you;

you will find a solace there.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
