The Seven Spirits of God


“The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him--the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.” (Isaiah 11:2)


“From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.” (Revelation 4:5)


We shall begin a new series today on the seven spirits of God and continue on Thursdays.


Prophet Isaiah, in his Messianic prophecy enumerates seven Spirits that will be operational in the Messiah. Apostle John also describes his vision of the seven blazing lamps which are before the throne of God, pointing out that they represent the seven spirits of God.


The Seven Spirits of God must not be understood in terms of a quantitative count of seven (different) spirits of God. Instead, it must be seen as a representation of the multifaceted nature of the Holy Spirit's work in the life of a believer.


Just as the fruit of the Spirit does not refer to nine different fruits that are produced by the Spirit but mere descriptions of the kind of fruit the Spirit bears in us when we yield to His influence, the seven spirits of God also describe the dimensions of the Spirit's work in us.


The number seven must be taken for its symbolic meaning. In biblical symbolism, seven represents wholeness or completeness. We must therefore yearn for the manifestation of all the seven dimensions in our lives. We shall delve into them one after another.

The current global standard for the measurement of dates is known as the Gregorian calendar, named after Pope Gregory XIII, under whose tenure it was instituted. IS GOD SILENT OR WE ARE DEAF?

Erwin W. Lutzer in his book, Seven Reasons Why You Can Trust the Bible, narrates the story of Ingmar Bergman, a Swedish film director who one day stood next to a portrait of Christ in a cathedral in Europe and whispered, “Speak to me!” He only encountered dead silence after waiting enough while. It has been said Bergman was motivated by this experience to come out with a movie entitled Silence, which portrayed people who despaired in their attempt to seek God.
