It Is Well

The hymn "It Is Well" was written by Horatio Spafford, an American lawyer and a businessman. 

Horatio and his wife, Anna, had five children. They lost one of them to pneumonia in 1871, and the remaining four drowned after a naval accident in 1873.

Mr. Stafford booked the next available ship to meet his grieving wife who had miraculously survived the same accident that took his kids away. When he got to the exact spot where his children had drowned, he was inspired to write the hymn, "It Is Well with My Soul." Be blessed as you meditate on the lyrics.


1 When peace like a river attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot Thou hast taught me to say,

“It is well, it is well with my soul!”

     

It is well with my soul!

It is well, it is well with my soul!


2 Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,

And hath shed His own blood for my soul.


3 My sin—oh, the bliss of this glorious thought—

My sin, not in part, but the whole,

Is nailed to His Cross, and I bear it no more;

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!


4 For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live;

If dark hours about me shall roll,

No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life

Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their labor. (Isaiah 3:10)
