God's Holy Oil is For His Servants
GOD'S HOLY OIL IS FOR HIS SERVANTS
"I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him." (Psalm 89:20)
If He found, does that mean He searched? Could it be that God is searching for people He could call His servants? If God should search today, can He refer to us as His servants?
God specially anoints people He finds to be His servants. There are peculiar characteristics of God's servants.
1. Their ultimate goal is to please God. They are therefore not men-pleasers. Paul is an example.
"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Gal 1:10)
2. Servants of God are more concerned about the service they ought to render than the honor they deserve to receive. Jesus offers Himself as an example.
"Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matt 20:28)
"So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'" (Luke 17:10)
The constant feeling of deserving honour/reward/recognition is not an attitude of a servant.
3. Servants of God are humble
"Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! (Phil 2:7-8)
Now, notice the effect of the anointing upon God's servants in verses 21-29 of Psalm 89.
21 With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
23 And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.
24 But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
28 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.
29 His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
May God find a servant in us!
