EXCELLING IN EXAMINATIONS
The ingredient for greatness is a small and humble beginning. You cannot wake up one morning and expect to be great or be highly recognized as great. The saying above helps us deduce the subject matter in mind that, it is a necessity to be adequately prepared for your external examination before you can emerge victorious or recognize yourself as an achiever.
The following points will broadly highlight the key measures that can be of great help to excel in your examination and the underlying factors that can make you linger about throughout exams period and eventually lead to failure.
1. Balance
Firstly, your
life has to be balanced. Balance here means that you can be involved in the
work of God and excel in your exams. It’s all about proper time management and
self-constraints. (2 Peter1:3, Proverbs 20:21)
2. Focus
You
need to have a focus by setting a specific target for yourself. What are your
desired results? Let that be your target.
3. Self-discipline
You
need to develop self-discipline. To achieve that, you must kill these time
wasters: (1) procrastination (2)
gossiping (3) idle talk ( irrelevant issues) and (4) excessive sleeping.
4. Right company
Keep
good company. Bad friends are not needed at this crucial point of your life
because WASSCE is an onset to a significant stage in your life.
5. Positivity
Know
that you are unique. By so doing you avail yourself to be dominated by positive
thoughts. Be a positive thinker by telling yourself it’s not too late and that you
can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. (Philippians 4:13)
6. Learning style and time
Develop
your own learning style and time and follow. You can make good use of abbreviations,
acronyms, group studies, etc. Most importantly, make sure you have an
independent time to study. Draw a study time table to enable you know when and
how long to study what. Below are important points to note in preparing your study timetable:

There must be a specific time for each
subject.

Place most of your study times around your
‘prime time’. Your prime time is the time in the day when you are most
effective in studies (your concentration level is at its highest).

PRWR:
P – Preview. Quickly scan through what you intend
to study.
R – Read. Now go back and carefully read and study
the material.
W – Write. Jot down the major points from the
material.
R – Recite. Go over the major points to ensure you
have well understood them. You should be able to both remember and explain what
you have studied.

SQ4R
S – Survey the material to get a broad idea of
what you are about to study.
Q – Question. Generate questions about the topic
to serve as your reading objective.
R – Read the material carefully, actively
searching for answers to the questions.
R –wRite. Summarize major points you will need to
remember.
R – Recite. Verbalize some of the things you’ve
learnt, either to yourself, a friend, or to a group.
R – Review what you’ve learnt. It makes it sink
deeper.
7. Past Questions
In
preparing for exams, you must solve as many past questions as possible. It
helps you to familiarize yourself with how questions are set and how they
should be solved. Discuss past questions and their solutions with friends and
teachers.
8. Diligence
Be
diligent. Always have your target before you and make the most of your time and
ability. Identify your weaknesses and work hard towards correcting them.
