EXCELLING IN EXAMINATIONS

The ingredient for greatness is a small and humble beginning. You cannot wake up one morning and expect to be great or be highly recognized as great. The saying above helps us deduce the subject matter in mind that, it is a necessity to be adequately prepared for your external examination before you can emerge victorious or recognize yourself as an achiever.
The following points will broadly highlight the key measures that can be of great help to excel in your examination and the underlying factors that can make you linger about throughout exams period and eventually lead to failure.

1.  Balance
Firstly, your life has to be balanced. Balance here means that you can be involved in the work of God and excel in your exams. It’s all about proper time management and self-constraints. (2 Peter1:3, Proverbs 20:21)

2.  Focus
You need to have a focus by setting a specific target for yourself. What are your desired results? Let that be your target.

3.  Self-discipline
You need to develop self-discipline. To achieve that, you must kill these time wasters:  (1) procrastination (2) gossiping (3) idle talk ( irrelevant issues) and (4) excessive sleeping.

4.  Right company
Keep good company. Bad friends are not needed at this crucial point of your life because WASSCE is an onset to a significant stage in your life.

5.  Positivity
Know that you are unique. By so doing you avail yourself to be dominated by positive thoughts. Be a positive thinker by telling yourself it’s not too late and that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. (Philippians 4:13)

6.  Learning style and time
Develop your own learning style and time and follow. You can make good use of abbreviations, acronyms, group studies, etc. Most importantly, make sure you have an independent time to study. Draw a study time table to enable you know when and how long to study what.

Below are important points to note in preparing your study timetable:
·         There must be a specific time for each subject.
·         Place most of your study times around your ‘prime time’. Your prime time is the time in the day when you are most effective in studies (your concentration level is at its highest).

The following are some techniques you may employ in your studies (you must know what works best for you):
·         PRWR:
P – Preview. Quickly scan through what you intend to study.
R – Read. Now go back and carefully read and study the material.
W – Write. Jot down the major points from the material.
R – Recite. Go over the major points to ensure you have well understood them. You should be able to both remember and explain what you have studied.

·         SQ4R
S – Survey the material to get a broad idea of what you are about to study.
Q – Question. Generate questions about the topic to serve as your reading objective.
R – Read the material carefully, actively searching for answers to the questions.
R –wRite. Summarize major points you will need to remember.
R – Recite. Verbalize some of the things you’ve learnt, either to yourself, a friend, or to a group.
R – Review what you’ve learnt. It makes it sink deeper.

It’s important to keep a personal notebook and pen (and calculator if applicable) when studying. Mathematics must not be read only; it must be practised. Solve questions to master the concept.

7.  Past Questions
In preparing for exams, you must solve as many past questions as possible. It helps you to familiarize yourself with how questions are set and how they should be solved. Discuss past questions and their solutions with friends and teachers.

8.  Diligence
Be diligent. Always have your target before you and make the most of your time and ability. Identify your weaknesses and work hard towards correcting them.
