How to study effectively
How to study effectively
There are
two basic objectives of effective studies: (1) to understand (2) to remember
There
is no substitute for diligence in effective studies as there is no shortcut in
learning.
You
have learnt something well if you have understood it (meaning you can explain
it to another person) and can always remember it (without consulting your
notes). You must always aim at meeting these two objectives whenever you pick a
book, or any material, to study.
The
benefit of studying is always worth the cost.If we adopt a studious lifestyle
and familiarize ourselves with the right study methods and are consistent in
practicing them, we shall become more effective and efficient in our various
fields of endeavor.
How to be an effective student
·
Set goals
for yourself. You cannot excel in your studies if you are not motivated by a
strong desire to achieve your goals. Your goals will challenge you to work
hard.
·
Know when to
study what.Identify the time of the day your concentration is highest and
study the relatively difficult subjects around that time. Some people
concentrate very well very early in the morning, for others, late at night.
·
Know where
to study. Study in a place where you will be free from unnecessary
distractions. Most students study best in a quiet environment.
·
Be in the
right frame of mind. You cannot concentrate when you are extremely tired,
worried, sick, or thinking of many things at the same time.
·
Discover and
adopt the study method that works best for you. There are
countless study methods you can adopt. Know the one that best works for you. The bottom line is: know yourself, and be sure that your
study style is working well for you.
·
Motivate
yourself to study. We hardly do things without being motivated by
something. Motivate yourself to study by developing interest in what you are
studying. Know that everything you study increases your knowledge. Relate what
you are learning to your environment and to your own life and goals.
·
Use a time
table. A timetable serves as a study plan. It helps you to make the
most of your time as far as your studies are concerned. You must know what you
have to study every day. Trust me; your timetable (or a study schedule) can be
a source of motivation to study.
·
Learn to
find solutions to your problems.Learn to consult colleagues and
teachers for explanations to issues you don’t understand. Someone definitely
understands something better than you do. Don’t be hesitant to tap into the
knowledge of others. It can put you some steps ahead of the one who wants to
understand everything in the world by himself. If possible, try to learn
everything on your own, but if you encounter challenges, feel free to consult.
